Fifth round of the Italian Championship in Viterbo
On Sunday, August 7th, the fifth round of the Italian Supermoto Championship took place at the International Circuit of Viterbo.
The first part of the day was characterized by hot and scorching weather, while in the afternoon, the races were affected by rain.
In the morning's S4 category qualifiers, Marco Malone #52 clocked the fourth-fastest time on the grid, while Guido Cilla #173 had to settle for seventeenth place.
In race one, Malone immediately followed Vandi and Ruiz but crashed during an overtake on the Spanish rider and finished in seventh position. Cilla managed to gain five positions, finishing in thirteenth place.
In race two, after a quick tire change in the pit lane due to the rain, Malone had a good start and managed the heat well, finishing in second position. This allowed him to step onto the third podium spot of the day.
Malone is still second in the Championship standings, 240 points behind Vandi. Cilla finished with a seventeenth-place finish for the day, having not participated in the second heat.
In the Junior category, Andrea Benvenuti qualified with the fourth-fastest time behind Ruttigliano. In the morning's race one, Andrea started very well and moved into second position but then finished in third position.
In race two, Andrea didn't get a good start and found himself in sixth place. The race was then cut short due to rain, and he finished in fifth position.
Benvenuti secured fourth place for the day and is now in third position in the overall Championship standings.
"A very intense weekend, and the unexpected rain caught everyone by surprise. Well done to Malone, who managed the situation well. A shame for Benvenuti in race two. Now we are preparing for the last double round in Pomposa in September; it's not over yet," commented Team Principal Gilda Benazzi.
Next appointment is on September 3rd and 4th for a two-day race event at the Pomposa Circuit in San Giuseppe di Comacchio (FE).
